The rolled chip is a shot that is used very close to the green. It consists in making the ball fly over the part that is not the green and then roll over the green until it reaches the hole.
We could also use the putt in this case, but the rolled chip prevents us from having bad bounces and also stops unexpected acceleration and deceleration of the ball. Thanks to this technique, we have better control of the distances and more consistency with our shots.
Technically it is a blow very similar to the putt, that is, of placement and the gesture of a pendulum. There is a very big nuance in this blow; and is you need to brush the grass so that the ball, thanks to the degrees of the club, can fly …
How to make the rolled chip shot?
The perfect posture is holding the club a little shorter on the handgrip than usual; we get reasonably close and on top of the ball; with the club slightly resting on the tip.
The stick must be supported in the center between the feet and the weight of the body must be balanced (50% / 50% on each foot).
The intention is to make an almost symmetrical pendulum with great ease; and that the club brushes the grass well at our point of impact. We must never feel that we have to force the movement or stop it to control the distance (as in the putt.)
This shot is made more or less two or three meters from the green. You have to roll the ball in the part where you cannot roll with a putt, choose a drop point inside the green, about two meters inside the green. The ball will bounce at this point and roll up to the goal. To fly more, or less, you need to choose a more, or less, closed club. Choosing a club with a few degrees makes the ball will roll more. If you choose a more open club the ball will roll less. The gesture is quite simple, it’s like a putt. You have to choose a gesture with which we are comfortable, and make this gesture changing the golf club to make the different distances. You have to look for simplicity in this type of shot and above all, train a lot.
I hope this has helped and see you soon at Golf Ibiza!
